Conference cycle: Aigua i món (Water & World)

The well-known TV3 meteorologist, Tomàs Molina, will star in the second paper this year, which will take place on Thursday 4 April in the morning, in this case at 11 am. His presentation will focus on the extreme weather phenomena, paying special attention to our country and the aggravation of these phenomena as a consequence of climate change.

Aigües de Sabadell will also address this edition one of the most important problems in the world: pollution of rivers, seas and oceans. And it will be done by two specialists in the field, such as Damià Barceló and Miquel Paraira. Barceló is the director of the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA), as well as a renowned and renowned professor and researcher. Paraira is a scientist and director of Water Quality of Aigües de Barcelona Barcelona.

Finally, in the last presentation of the year, the journalist and writer from Sabadell, Plàcid Garcia-Planas, will be in charge of reviewing the history of our city, valuing water as an indispensable element from the point of view of industrial textile power as for the growth and dignity of the citizens themselves.

12th IWA International Conference on Water Reclamation and Reuse

12th IWA International Conference on Water Reclamation and Reuse

Water stress, either caused by droughts, competing water uses or hydrological conditions is an important driver for an efficient water management by all water users. This applies to many regions across the world. Water reclamation and reuse – “Overcoming Water Stress by Water Reclamation and Reuse” – is the key strategy to cope with these problems. The capital city: Berlin

Berlin is a fascinatingly unique mix of history, zeitgeist and energy, a city combining great cultural diversity with an incomparable range of events and opportunities of sightseeing. The remnants of the Berlin Wall, the Holocaust Memorial, plus a new government quarter in Germany’s capital – all coining a cityscape where the traces of Germany’s more recent history are vividly evident.

Get your own impression of this vibrant city here.

Focusing on water, Berlin with its very narrow water cycle is a good example for water stress based on seasonal changes and the risk to develop towards permanent water stress due to climate change and urban growth. Besides the Berlin Water Company (BWB) a range of highly active water networks, e.g. German Water Partnership (GWP) and AQUANET and research institutions, e.g. Technical University of Berlin, IGB Leibniz-Institute of Freshwater Ecology among others are located here. As German capital, all important high level governmental institutions are represented in Berlin, e.g. the Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and the German Environment Agency (UBA).

International Conference on Water, Informatics, Sustainability, and Environment 2019 @ Richcraft Hall, Carleton University
Aug 6 – Aug 8 all-day

International Conference on Water, Informatics, Sustainability, and Environment 2019

International Conference on Water, Informatics, Sustainability, and Environment 2019 is a three-day conference hosted at Carleton University, Ottawa on 7-9 August, 2019. The conference is co-organised by Ottawa Assembly of Knowledge and Science Target , in collaboration with local and international academic and professional bodies.

International Conference on Water, Informatics, Sustainability, and Environment 2019

The conference is centered around the themes of water, informatics, sustainability, and the environment; all of which relate to global warming and climate change. Together, conference attendees will draw linkages between these themes, and learn about cutting-edge research, technology and practice in these fields. Field-leading experts will deliver keynote talks, while focused themed sessions will offer the opportunity to delve deeper into specific issues and solutions.

We are excited to welcome a diverse cohort of roughly one-hundred researchers and experts from across the world, representing a variety of organisations including government bodies, academic institutions, and NGOs.

AN URGENT TOPIC

The recent IPCC report reminds us of the urgency of climate action. Specifically, the report states that we have just twelve years to avert a climate catastrophe, in which time we must ensure that the tipping point of 1.5 degrees Celsius, relative to pre-industrial levels, is not surpassed.

Many of us, as scientists and industry experts, will not be surprised by this latest warning. The spectre of irreversible climate change is clear for all to see. Take extreme weather events as an indicative case: there has been a noticeable uptick in the frequency and intensity of such events across the world. In the USA alone, we can observe the effects of climate change on both coasts. Devastating wildfires razed swathes of California, following an extensive and debilitating period of drought. Meanwhile, the East Coast of the United States is being hit one again by high winds, including Hurricane Michael, the strongest tropical cyclone to strike the continental US since 1992.

The global response at present is wholly inadequate. London, for example, exceeded its annual air pollution target within one month last year (2018), along with most EU countries. Canada missed the 1992 Rio target and the 2005 Kyoto benchmark, and is projected to miss 2020 and 2030 emissions targets by a wide margin.

In fact, the ‘global response’ itself is increasingly a contradiction in terms, as behemoths such as the United States withdraw from international climate Accords and Agreements under the whims of a climate sceptic White House. However, even before the incumbent government the US failed to ratify the Kyoto Protocol, which should remind us that a fragmented global response precipitated by great power isolationism is not without precedent.

Meanwhile, the effects of climate change and global warming are by no means equally distributed. Island nations and coastal areas from the Maldives through to Venice, and less economically developed regions, face an immediate threat and continuing plight. For citizens of these societies, climate change is not a future concern but an existential threat and immediate reality. The wounds inflicted by global warming are therefore not simply environmental and physical, but economic, social, and demographic.

We trust that iWISE2019 attendees grasp the urgency of our endeavors.

IWISE2019 OFFERS THE FOLLOWING

11th IWA EE YWP Conference: Water for All, Water for Nature, Reliable Water Supply, Wastewater, Treatment and Reuse
Oct 1 – Oct 5 all-day

11th IWA EE YWP Conference: Water for All, Water for Nature, Reliable Water Supply, Wastewater, Treatment and Reuse

11th Eastern European Young Water Professionals Conference

For this conference, with a title Water for All – Water for Nature, Reliable Water Supply, Wastewater Treatment and Reuse we have prepared following program:

  • We will start with several practical workshops, preliminary topics: modelling course, new measurements technics and instruments for monitoring of WWTP, new process solutions and calculations, but also workshops to improve your soft skills: how to publish, how to apply, how to present. This practical part will take 2 days (1 -2 October 2019), you will have an opportunity to select and apply for one or several workshops. You will receive an IWA advanced training certificate. We hope that more YWPs from utilities will be attracted by this special practical training session of the event.
  • Two following days (3 -4 October 2019) will be dedicated to scientific presentations. This part of the conference will take place in Masarykova Kolej Conference Center. Also this year we would like to give more opportunities for YWPs who would like to prepare an oral presentations. So we follow the concept: two parallel sessions will run at the same time, one focusing on water management, another on water treatment technologies; however coffee breaks and lunch will take place in one common area to support networking between YWPs. Moreover, there will be long and short type of presentation: 10 minutes for a standard presentation and 3 minutes for a short presentation, this presentation can be completed by a poster (not must). We believe that in this way we help YWPs successfully apply for financial support, as for most of the countries a poster presentation is not sufficient reason to travel abroad.
  • University Challenge – learning in competition (NEW in 2019).
  • An extended social program which will take part during the conference days: dinners, meetings, technical and cultural tours and more.

MAIN TOPICS

  • Tendencies in water and wastewater qualities
  • Innovative sampling and monitoring strategies
  • New technologies in water and wastewater treatment
  • Overcoming inappropriate influent C:N:P ratios through cost-effective wastewater treatment technologies
  • Adaptation specialties of technologies successfully applied in other regions
  • Specialties of industrial wastewater treatment
  • Mathematical modelling, simulation studies
  • Issues and challenges in water loss management
  • Energy efficiency
  • Impacts of climate change
  • Lake ecosystems
  • Flood hazard and risk
