International Conference on Water, Informatics, Sustainability, and Environment 2019
International Conference on Water, Informatics, Sustainability, and Environment 2019 is a three-day conference hosted at Carleton University, Ottawa on 7-9 August, 2019. The conference is co-organised by Ottawa Assembly of Knowledge and Science Target , in collaboration with local and international academic and professional bodies.
The conference is centered around the themes of water, informatics, sustainability, and the environment; all of which relate to global warming and climate change. Together, conference attendees will draw linkages between these themes, and learn about cutting-edge research, technology and practice in these fields. Field-leading experts will deliver keynote talks, while focused themed sessions will offer the opportunity to delve deeper into specific issues and solutions.
We are excited to welcome a diverse cohort of roughly one-hundred researchers and experts from across the world, representing a variety of organisations including government bodies, academic institutions, and NGOs.
AN URGENT TOPIC
The recent IPCC report reminds us of the urgency of climate action. Specifically, the report states that we have just twelve years to avert a climate catastrophe, in which time we must ensure that the tipping point of 1.5 degrees Celsius, relative to pre-industrial levels, is not surpassed.
Many of us, as scientists and industry experts, will not be surprised by this latest warning. The spectre of irreversible climate change is clear for all to see. Take extreme weather events as an indicative case: there has been a noticeable uptick in the frequency and intensity of such events across the world. In the USA alone, we can observe the effects of climate change on both coasts. Devastating wildfires razed swathes of California, following an extensive and debilitating period of drought. Meanwhile, the East Coast of the United States is being hit one again by high winds, including Hurricane Michael, the strongest tropical cyclone to strike the continental US since 1992.
The global response at present is wholly inadequate. London, for example, exceeded its annual air pollution target within one month last year (2018), along with most EU countries. Canada missed the 1992 Rio target and the 2005 Kyoto benchmark, and is projected to miss 2020 and 2030 emissions targets by a wide margin.
In fact, the ‘global response’ itself is increasingly a contradiction in terms, as behemoths such as the United States withdraw from international climate Accords and Agreements under the whims of a climate sceptic White House. However, even before the incumbent government the US failed to ratify the Kyoto Protocol, which should remind us that a fragmented global response precipitated by great power isolationism is not without precedent.
Meanwhile, the effects of climate change and global warming are by no means equally distributed. Island nations and coastal areas from the Maldives through to Venice, and less economically developed regions, face an immediate threat and continuing plight. For citizens of these societies, climate change is not a future concern but an existential threat and immediate reality. The wounds inflicted by global warming are therefore not simply environmental and physical, but economic, social, and demographic.
We trust that iWISE2019 attendees grasp the urgency of our endeavors.

11th IWA EE YWP Conference: Water for All, Water for Nature, Reliable Water Supply, Wastewater, Treatment and Reuse
For this conference, with a title Water for All – Water for Nature, Reliable Water Supply, Wastewater Treatment and Reuse we have prepared following program:
- We will start with several practical workshops, preliminary topics: modelling course, new measurements technics and instruments for monitoring of WWTP, new process solutions and calculations, but also workshops to improve your soft skills: how to publish, how to apply, how to present. This practical part will take 2 days (1 -2 October 2019), you will have an opportunity to select and apply for one or several workshops. You will receive an IWA advanced training certificate. We hope that more YWPs from utilities will be attracted by this special practical training session of the event.
- Two following days (3 -4 October 2019) will be dedicated to scientific presentations. This part of the conference will take place in Masarykova Kolej Conference Center. Also this year we would like to give more opportunities for YWPs who would like to prepare an oral presentations. So we follow the concept: two parallel sessions will run at the same time, one focusing on water management, another on water treatment technologies; however coffee breaks and lunch will take place in one common area to support networking between YWPs. Moreover, there will be long and short type of presentation: 10 minutes for a standard presentation and 3 minutes for a short presentation, this presentation can be completed by a poster (not must). We believe that in this way we help YWPs successfully apply for financial support, as for most of the countries a poster presentation is not sufficient reason to travel abroad.
- University Challenge – learning in competition (NEW in 2019).
- An extended social program which will take part during the conference days: dinners, meetings, technical and cultural tours and more.
- Tendencies in water and wastewater qualities

Water and Society 2019 Conference
The Water and Society 2019 Conference is to be reconvened in 2019 following the success of the previous meetings, the first of which was held in Las Vegas in 2011, followed by a meeting in 2013 in the New Forest, UK, home to the Wessex Institute; La Coruna, Spain (2015) and Seville, Spain (2017).
Over the centuries, civilisations have relied on the availability of clean and inexpensive water. This can no longer be taken for granted as the need for water continues to increase due to the pressure from growing global population demanding higher living standards. Agriculture and industry, major users of water, are at the same time those that contribute to its contamination. Water distribution networks in urban areas, as well as soiled water collection systems, present serious problems in response to a growing population as well as the need to maintain ageing infrastructures.
Many technologically feasible solutions, such as desalination or pumping systems are energy demanding but, as costs rise, the techniques currently developed may need to be re-assessed. The Conference will address the interaction between water and energy systems.
This meeting will encourage trans-disciplinary communication on issues related to the nature of water, and its use and exploitation by society. The conference is motivated by the need to bridge the gap between the broad spectrum of social political sciences and humanistic disciplines and specialists in physical sciences, biology, environmental sciences and health, among others.
The socio-political implications of a world short of clean, easily available water are enormous. It will lead to realignments in international politics and the emergence of new centres of power in the world.
Policy makers need to be educated and advised on developing policies and regulations that will support the water systems of tomorrow. The role of society and its involvement with water is paramount. To meet the future demands for water, new standards, new training and additional support roles will best be delivered by those knowledgeable of the new technologies and direction of the industry.
The intention of the Water and Society series of conferences is to review these issues, as well as the more technical aspects of water resources management and quality, to help put forward policies and legislation that will lead to improved solutions for all.
The papers selected for presentation and included in the Conference book are permanently stored in the WIT eLibrary where they are permanently available to the international scientific community (www.witpress.com/elibrary).
The following list covers some of the topics to be presented at Water and Society 2019. Papers on other subjects related to the objectives of the conference are also welcome.
- Water resources management
- Water as a human right
- Water quality
- Water resources contamination
- Water, sanitation and health
- Water and disaster management
- Policy and legislation
- Future water demands

IWA Water and Development Congress & Exhibition 2019
IWA Water and Development Congress & Exhibition 2019
Sustainable solutions for emerging economies? To achieve the 2030 Sustainable Development Goal 6 of ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all, will require a massive effort by the water and sanitation practitioners, especially those in low and middle income countries. We are beyond a simple model of expanded investment in infrastructure, there are numerous challenges and they are linked in often complex ways. For example, progress in the sector is significantly hampered by an overall shortage of appropriately skilled people in the workforce. IWA has published a preliminary analysis from 15 countries in 2014. Developing and emerging economies have made efforts to cope with the challenges, training, establishing competency frameworks, organizational development and implementing institutional frameworks. This is only one issue for which the fifth Water and Development Congress & Exhibition creates an opportunity to share, mutually reinforce and accelerate work in progress.
IWA’s Water and Development Congress series aims to catalyse transformational change and support transition to new ways of managing water resources and delivering water services. The Congress is explicitly solutions-focused, its performance indicators include the level of effective networking, knowledge exchange and the generation of new ideas shared by the participants.
Participants to the IWA’s Water and Development Congress can expect to leave the conference with new ideas and be inspired to take these back and share them with their colleagues or apply them in their own areas of work.
